Sikh Major beliefs
Sikhism stresses the importance of good actions rather than merely carrying out rituals. Sikhs believe the way to lead a good life is to keep God in heart and mind at all times, live honestly and work hard, treat everyone equally, to be generous to the less fortunate, to serve others, and to believe in the equality of men and women. Their beliefs in God include that there is only one God without form or gender and that everyone has direct access to God. They also believe that everyone is equal before God and that a good life is lived as a part of the community, by living honestly and caring for others. Their final belief having to do with God is that empty religious rituals and superstitions have no value in God’s eyes. Their beliefs having to do with their connection to God includes focusing their lives around their relationship with God and their community. They believe that humans spend their lives in a cycle of birth, life, and rebirth which is very similar to Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. They also believe that quality of life depends on karma and the only way out of the cycle is to achieve total knowledge of God and union with God. They believe that Mukti (liberation) through the grace of God can only be achieved if one is not focused on oneself. Sikhs also believe that God can only really be experienced through love, worship, and contemplation. Their final belief that God is inside every person, no matter how horrible them may seem. The Sikhs beliefs on God beyond us is that God’s message is written in his creation- open your eyes and you will see the truth. They also believe that humans misunderstand the universe and that it does not exist on its own, it exists because God wills it to be so. Their final belief is that God’s word is sent down through scripture. All these beliefs are important parts of Sikh culture and how they approach life.
