holidays
The biggest holiday in the Sikhism religion is the birthday of the community, and the Sikh New Year, known as Baisakhi. Baisakhi is also well known as Vaisakhi, and falls on April 13 or 14, the reason it changes is because they follow a solar calendar instead of a lunar one like most western civilizations. The day starts really early in the morning and it begins with a bath in the holy river and followed by morning prayers and dances. You also get together with your community and and travel to the community Gurdwaras, and take part in special ceremonial prayers together. After this, it follows a community lunch and Kara prasad or sweetened semolina being served. After the lunch, the Sikh people under the leadership of panj piaras march through major locations of Punjab and sing songs along with dances. Farmers celebrate this holiday by thanking the divine one for a good harvest and pray for a good one next year. Farmers spend the day singing and eating good food with their family.
